Commonly, the home is thought of as a safe, secure environment; however, many things occur to threaten the sanctity of this atmosphere. Students discuss the characteristics of common natural disasters and describe how to prepare and protect their family and home. They learn how to protect children from chemical poisonings, which are often caused by everyday products and medicines. Students examine the properties and requirements of fire and what to do if caught in a house fire, and they learn the importance of smoke alarms, fire extinguishers, and escape routes. General first aid and CPR are explored as students perform CPR and the Heimlich maneuver on adult and infant mannequins. This curriculum also teaches students bicycle safety and the importance of wearing helmets.
